1 10 FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1949 THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE TODAY'S NEWS TODAY Chuckles Found Galore In 'Unfaithfully Yours' Rex Harrison Ideally Cast in New Comedy; "Belle Starr's Daughter" Typical Western. BY MILDRED STOCKARD Chronicle Amusements Editor relied Preston Sturges always can bel upon for originality. never follows the standard Hollywood pattern, but each of his pictures is with his individuality. stanneds a touch of zaniness, a mingling of subtle humor and the broadest sort of slapstick. And his characters are with a satirical pen.

Yours," His latest, one, opened "Unfaithfully Thursday at the Metropolitan is no exception. With Rex Harrison, Linda Darrellice Rudy as its Vallee stars, it and has Barbara plenty of entertainment value. The other picture which opened Thursday is "Belle Starr's Daughter." a typical "hoss opera" which gallops across, the screen of the Majestic. Cameron, George Montgomery and Ruth Roman are its stars. "Unfaithfully Yours" is a picture serious music lovers will enjoy, for its wacky plot has a background of fine music, with Rex Harrison doing an magnificent job of conducting excerpts from Wagner, Rossini and Tschaikowsky.

It's a tribute to. his acting ability, and his expert coaching, that the can't actually read a note of music. It tells the story of a temperamental, and very famous, orchestra conductor whose imagination runs wild when he becomes suspicious of his wife. In his mind, he plans revenge while conducting a concert, each plan suited and inspired by the mood of the music he is conducting. Each plan is as fantastic as most daydreams are, and he goes through with each with the most admirable poise and sang-froid.

At the end of the concert, he dashes to his apartment to set in motion the "perfect crime" he had envisioned, but he lacks the poise of his dreams. He wrecks the apartment. T. All of his schemes backfire, and eventually his puzzled wife discovers the cause of his strange behavior and explains the incident which had aroused his jealousy. Harrison is ideally cast as the great conductor.

He has the manner and the charm as- sociated with the musically great, and he has acting ability to play zany comedy without seeming ridiculous. Linda Darnell, one of Hollywood's loveliest, is aptly cast a as adoring wife, and Barbaral Lawrence has a goo. role as her parried to Vallee and havgold-digging blond, sister who is ing an affair with Kurt Krueger. Vallee, as the stuffy multimillionaire who hates music, is at his best. the handsome blond Swiss actor, In support are Kurt Krueger, who is rast as Harrison's secretary, Lionel Stander, as the musiIcian's comical manager, and the late Edgar Kennedy as the delective who is hired by Vallee to watch Linda when he takes too hinterally Harrison's parting comEment to "keep an eye 0.1 my wife." The siapstick may be overdone in a few scenes, but "Untaithfully Yours" is chockful of chuckles, and is musically inspiring besides.

"Belle Starr's Daughter" is an old -time Western, with the love interest cut to the minimum and the emphasis on action, hard riding and gun fire. All of the old cliches of Westerns are incorporated into it. The villain wears a black coat and the favorite cry of the gang is "let's get out of here." But in spite of the picture does hold the interest 'and it is capably acted. Rod Cameron plays the villain, for the first time in screen career. while George Montgomtolery, the cowboy actor, is the heroic town marshal who falls in love with the girl he has to arrest, Belle Starr's daughter Rose, I played by Ruth Roman.

The setting is the Ozarks hideout of Belle Starr, the famous woman bandit of the '80s. When she is killed by one of her own gang who had revolted against her, her young daughter swears vengeance. She thinks her mother was killed by a posse from the neighboring town, led by the marshal. In spite of herself, she is attracted to him, and when she learns, too late, that the man who killed her mother is the leader of the new gang she has joined, she gives herself up. On the other hand, Donat told me last summer that because his mother is living in Connecticut, if anything came up that he was interested in, he would come here.

The role that broke Wallace Beery's heart to refuse in "Curtain Call at Cactus Creek," goes to Walter Brennan. It's a a a a a wonderful story and after Beery read it, he was on the point of going against his doctor's orders and accepting Bill Goetz' offer, but he knew he must rest. So Brennan, who has been in Oregon, comes back for this part. Walter will be good, too. Four years ago, Paulette Goddard made a picture, "Forest Rangers," for the United States Forestry Department. At the time, they asked her if there was anything they could do for her. So, exactly four years later a truck drives up to Columbia and delivers 3000 seedling trees to Paulette, "compliments of the United States Forestry Department." Among them are several hundred redwoods that take 2000 years and heavens know how much space to mature. Betty Grable was so with the screen possibilities of Keefe Brasselle several months ago that she wrote me a letter asking if I would bring him to the attention of Humphrey Bogart for "Knock On Any Door." As you know, John Derek got it. Poor Keefe became so discouraged that he took a job as a salesman and things were going so badly for him, his wife and baby, that they barely managed the rent money or enough food. Now the story gets brighter. Ida Lupino saw a picture of Brasselle in a movie magazine and looked him up.
